Tom Dixon presents Materiality at The Coal Office
live tour of the coal office
Tom gave an Instagram live tour of the Coal Office, taking you on a journey around the exhibition, including the multiple rooms, each with unique narratives. He also presented the latest collections.
SPACES
Exploring the innovative materials at the core of Tom Dixon
CORK
This room showcases the raw and natural beauty of cork. Cork sheets clad the walls and our chubby-edged CORK furniture is on display, representing the versatility and innovative qualities of it as a material. Cork sheets have been supplied by Amorim, the world's biggest cork processing group.
The new PRESS collection, a family of pendant and surface lights made from thick and transparent ribbed glass, illuminate the space.
PRESS
The new lights feature in a window display in the shop. Made from thick glass, the pendant shapes are reminiscent of shipping buoys and children’s toys and the rippled surface projects linear and stripy patterns onto its surroundings.
A vibrant yellow curved backdrop, supplied by paper artisans G.F Smith capture the shadow play and reflectivity of the PRESS lights.
PUCK
Our award-winning PUCK glassware is on display in one of the shop arches. Acknowledging Tom’s love of stacking, the collection features in a sculptural totem highlighting the craftsmanship and shapes of the range.
The new GLOBE BURST, a large in scale and highly reflective spectacular chandelier made up of 12 spherical orbs exploding from a single point, complement the PUCK display.
MELT & CLOUD
The new MELT Chandeliers launch for the first time in the UK during LDF and feature in a kinetic installation, exploring luminosity, light-play and movement. Fitted with a new LED module, the MELT Chandeliers are Tom Dixon’s attempt to rethink the contemporary chandelier.
The highly reflective polished aluminium CLOUD collection, a family of platters, bowls and vases will also be on display with MELT.
the jungle
This immersive space in the Perfumery of the Shop transports you to a scene of natural surroundings and fully stimulate sour senses of sight, smell and sound.
Giant green plants, provided by Botanical Boys, are positioned to evoke a tropical setting accompanied by a soothing rainforest soundtrack. The reflective MIRROR BALL lights conjure images of raindrops alongside the naturally crafted CORK shelving.
A powerful fragrance of intense ginger and woody Haitian caradom, from Underground Candle scent, is diffused into the space to further arouse a natural environment.
the museum
For the first time ever, you can look inside Tom's private collection. Investigate his sculptural busts acquired during his travel over the years. Paying homage to our archival pieces which are normally on display in international museum collections, a dedicated area spotlights limited edition and unseen objects.
d-line
Tom Dixon’s new FAT collection of hardware, in collaboration with Danish ironmongery brand d-line, also debuts in our Flagship Store for LDF.
Each piece, including door handles, door stops and knockers, is minimalist enough to be timeless in its design, with soft, generous profiles are ‘fatter’ than the norm. By having rounded ends and very grippable handles, the collection works in a variety of settings - from nursey schools to hospitals, to nightclubs.
The pieces are enduringly crafted in highly resilient stainless steel, preferred by d-line, and enhanced by a a bold colour palette of various PVD finishes.
VITRA
Tom Dixon’s collaboration with leading Turkish bathroom manufacturer VitrA is showcased in their retail shop throughout LDF. The collection, entitled ‘Liquid’ is a comprehensive range that encompasses all elements of the bathroom – sanitaryware, furniture, taps, tiles, shower systems, and accessories – designed to work together or as stand-alone pieces. One of the arches in the shop feature a fountain installation highlighting the new range.
MASS
We launch the new MASS collection, a family of super polished solid brass tables, coat and book stands. Proudly designed and manufactured in the UK, the collection’s materiality of solid brass extrusions allows it to be interpreted in multiple configurations.
Designed exclusively for the Materiality exhibition, a limited-edition MASS 4-Poster bed is on display in the Gallery. Adorning the MASS bed is Kvadrat’s new Sisu fabric, a thickly woven checked upholstery designed by Nanna Ditzel and Danh Vo. Kvadrat’s Sisu fabric complements the warm brass tones of the MASS family.
Illuminating MASS is the new MELT chandeliers in golden hues.
