Introducing BEAT

Today we celebrate Tom Dixon’s extraordinary objects, including BEAT lighting.

Bearing the mark of its maker, BEAT is a celebration of the beauty of things created by hand. Each BEAT light is made from hand-spun brass, sculpted by artisan craftsmen in Northern India. They retain hammer marks from their forming and as part of an ancient process, each light takes four days to complete.

British design brand Tom Dixon will host a ‘24 Hours’ event in Shanghai on 3rd June to coincide with Design Shanghai, the biggest design fair in Asia. Entitled ‘DIXONARY’ – a nod to the designer’s eponymous book soon to be published in Mandarin, the event will celebrate the brand’s past, present and future.

Tom Dixon DIXIONARY

Tom says: ‘Shanghai’s importance as a trade finance and industry hub of international significance is universally known, but the powerful influence of Shanghai as a culture, innovative and design city is probably a little less talked about and is instrumental in our decision for us to have our main China retail located here. The chaos of the pandemic has meant that we have been waiting for the right opportunity to come to Shanghai and for a short while we thought that we might be able to travel to finally see our new stores in person. However, the seemingly endless restrictions meant that we didn’t want to wait any more so we have initiated the first 24 Hours project outside of Europe in SHANGHAI and we will use all virtual means to teleport ourselves to the amazing megapolis that is modern Shanghai. The ‘24 Hours in Shanghai’ project is not just a means of showing the latest ideas from Tom Dixon, nor is it just a means of explaining the history of the brand, it really is a chance to meet new friends and collaborators in China, not just from the emerging powerful young designer community, but also artists in floristry, food and music, to engage with old friends and also to discuss the future of product and interior design.’

As part of ‘24 Hours in Shanghai’, Tom Dixon will also introduce for the first time in Asia, the new limited-edition 100% recyclable HYDRO chair. Made entirely from re-used aluminium, it aptly celebrates the theme of circular design which is a key narrative of the Design Shanghai fair. The HYDRO chair will be on display in the recently opened Xintiandi shop from 3rd June.

Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions still in place in the UK, Tom will not be able to travel but his hologram will make appearances for live events alongside key figures from the design, fashion, music, media and art worlds. Tom’s hologram will host a talk at Design Shanghai with Young Emerging Chinese talents on 3rd June. By using hologram technology, Dixon's team will create the illusion that the designer is in Shanghai in person, when in fact he will be standing in front of a green screen in his London HQ (King’s Cross).

For the first time the ‘24 Hours’ campaign will be broadcast live across the brand’s Asian social media platforms as well as Instagram, meaning all countries and time zones can tune in to the program.

Tom Dixon’s Chief Executive Officer Hans Hoegstedt said: ‘It is testament to the continued hard work of aMOD our partners in PCR and the Tom Dixon family that we are able to continue forging ahead with our expansion plans, despite the challenging circumstances that have been faced over the past months. I am incredibly grateful to our colleagues on the ground and aMOD for their unwavering commitment to making Tom Dixon a success story in China and we very much look forward to welcoming more of our Chinese customers in our shops and online.’
